Portreath beach best bodyboarding surfing beaches spots waves Cornwall UK

Located in west Cornwall, just north of Redruth, Portreath village is a little bay nestled in the high cliffs between Gwithian, Godrevy, Porthtowan and St Agnes. Portreath is steeped in mining history with many of the old features of this once highly lucrative business still on display. It also offers the start to some of the best walking on the north coast of Cornwall and the start of a great cycle ride to Devoron on the south coast along the old mineral tramway. Information in the village also picks out many other walking and riding trails.

Portreath beach is possibly one of the best bodyboarding and surfing spots in the UK. Spawning some of the country’s top bodyboarders. The beach offers both left and right-hand breaking waves, mostly around 3/4 tide. When the banks are good a wave called the vee starts to work. The Vee is a wedging right hand refraction off the harbour wall on a high tide. It is here that you will see the best bodyboarding in the UK. Local guys such as 7 times UK champion Damian Prisk, 5 times UK Champion Danny Catton and a host of others like, Eldred Hawke, Tim Brown, Brooke Mason and others showing you how it is done. The Vee is very tidal dependent and the sand banks need to be just right but when it is on, you will see all the top performance bodyboarding moves happening metres away from the sand. The beach faces north/north west so it loves any wind with a bit of south in it to make it offshore. Tides wise Portreath prefers mid to high.

The main wave here is the reef at the end of the harbour wall which on its day is a site to behold, a very powerful and heavy jacking righthander which comes out of deep water to produce some amazing tubes that are amazing for bodyboarding. Not for the faint hearted but great to watch.

Generally, Portreath beach is a safe beach for bodyboarding with the best lifeguard facilities in the UK. The whole beach front is like a natural amphitheater and a great spot to watch all the action, keep your eye on the kids or watch the amazing sunsets we get over Gull Rock

Portreath also has one of the best surf shops in the area. HQ surf shop and Bodyboard HQ cater for everyone from beginner to expert with surf hire, tuition and a great selection of surfing and bodyboarding products; at great prices too. www.bodyboardhq.co.uk

BODYBOARD HQ’s NEWEST TEAM RIDER, JAMES TREVENA

Portreath has produced a whole bunch of young bodyboarders these past two years. It is great to see their level of commitment and dedication, whatever the conditions. We are now starting to see some of these riders really starting to shine through. Lads like James Trevena and Luke Trowel are improving week by week and with James’ recent contest result at the British nationals championship, we have seen a massive boost in his confidence.

I decided to head down to the beach with the camera this eve to take a few snaps. It was misty and grey but the action in the water more than made up for the gloom.

Here are a few shots from this evening of our latest addition to the Bodyboard HQ team, James Trevena. Watch out for this guy, I reckon you will be seeing a lot more of him.

HOW TO FIT A LEASH PLUG TO A BODYBOARD

Check out this cool little video on how to plug your new bodyboard
You don’t always have to heat your screwdriver before plugging, its an extra prevention to prevent water seaping into the core.

We nearly always cut the thread down by a few mil or so in order to get a tighter fit into the board. A good idea is to squeeze a bit of silicon sealant into the hole before putting the plug in then tighten it up.

It is often really dificult to see the stringer on darker coloured boards, no matter how strong the light is. To be on the safe side, offset the leash slightly to prevent hitting the stringer.

If you need any more info on fitting leashes just give us a call at the shop and we’ll explain more.
Cheers

BODYBOARD HQ BRITISH NATIONALS BODYBOARDING COMP 2011- 8/9 OCTOBER PORTHTOWAN

BUILD-UP TO THE 2011 BRITISH BODYBOARD NATIONALS COMMENCES
The British Nationals, traditionally the culmination of the UK bodyboard contest calendar, are this year being sponsored by Bodyboard HQ, the UK’s longest running and biggest bodyboard shop, based in Portreath, Cornwall.

Owner of Bodyboard HQ Dave Heard said: “We’re proud to get behind what has become the most popular bodyboarding event in the UK, and we look to get in…volved in a lot more events in the future.”

The Nationals are provisionally scheduled for 8-9 October and will be the biggest event on the Auto-Sleepers British Bodyboard Club’s 5-event tour; potentially deciding the winner of the Tour’s Open, Drop Knee and Women’s sections.

With generous cash prizes across all 8 divisions, the weekend will be set to pull in competitors from the length and breadth of the British Isles.

Dave continued; “with the now established venue of Porthtowan being just around the corner from us in Portreath, it’s a great fit. We have always, and continue to, support local bodyboarders, top riders such as Eldred Hawke, Tim Brown, Alex Winkworth, Steven Hall and 5 X British champion Danny Catten. We are hoping that our team can make a big impact on the event once again”.

The Nationals will crown the bodyboarding champions in the age divisions (U14, U16, U18, Seniors and Masters) and the Tour the Champions in the Open, Drop Knee and Women’s sections.
To keep abreast of developments on the Tour and further announcements including online entry forms check out www.britishbodyboardclub.co.uk; or, alternatively for more information on the event and places to stay locally, please contact Dave at Bodyboard HQ on 01209 844806, you can also check the website at www.bodyboardhq.co.uk or facebook: Bodyboard HQ for the very latest info on the contest.
